Stealing Practice Squad Players

1. A team may attempt to steal another team’s practice squad player, with compensation of a draft pick in the upcoming draft, one round higher than the round the player was originally drafted in.

2. 1st Round practice squad players are compensated with one 1st Round Pick and one 2nd Round Pick.

3. If a team has multiple picks within the required round, the stealing team chooses which pick to offer.

4. The player’s current owner has two options. They can keep the player by promoting him to their active roster, or they can accept the draft pick compensation and allow the player to be stolen.

5. When a player is successfully stolen, the new team is allowed to either transfer them into their own practice squad or straight on to their active roster. Roster/practice squad size is still enforced during this process. This is the only time a player can be added to a practice squad outside of the normal process.

6. Once a player has been stolen once, they can no longer be stolen again-even if they were assigned to the new team’s practice squad.

Summary and Example Scenario

Hopefully that wasn’t too confusing. Essentially, the practice squad is a way to safely stash your draft picks while you wait for them to become productive fantasy players instead of feeling like they are clogging up your active roster.

However, it’s not perfectly safe, since other teams can potentially swoop on the players you’ve stashed. That’s the key wrinkle to make this more interesting and differentiate the practice squad from just additional roster spots.

Here’s an example of the timeline a team might go through with their practice squad.

May 2021
Steven drafts:
Jaylen Waddle (1st Round)
Trevor Lawrence (1st Round)
Elijah Moore (2nd Round)
Dyami Brown (3rd Round)

August 2021
Steven has all of his practice squad spots open. Steven puts Waddle, Tlaw, Moore, Brown on his practice squad.

September 2021
Mitchell likes himself some Jaylen Waddle and attempts to steal him from Steven. Since Waddle was a 1st Round Pick, Mitchell must offer a 2022 1st and 2022 second as compensation for his thievery. Steven accepts the compensation because he’s okay with getting a 1st and 2nd for a player he drafted in the 1st (Waddle). Mitchell can either place Waddle on his practice squad, or elevate him to his active roster

Tim also likes himself Elijah Moore and attempts to steal him from Steven. Since Moore was a 2nd round pick, Tim must offer a 2022 1st. Unfortunately for Tim, he does not have a 2022 1st thus he cannot steal from Steven and the two parties must agree to a trade if Moore were to be moved.

Instead, Kevin attempts to steal Elijah Moore from Steven. Again, since Moore was a 2nd round pick, Kevin must offer a 2022 1st. Kevin has his 1st, Jason’s 1st, and Matt’s 1st. Kevin can choose any of the 3 1sts to “steal” Elijah Moore from Steven’s practice squad. Instead of taking the compensation, Steven believes Moore is worth more than a single first, and moves Moore to his active roster.

Steven is now left with only Tlaw and Dyami Brown on his practice squad, who he keeps there for the remainder of the season.

IR increase from 2 to 5

Have been using at least 5 IR spots last two years due to COVID. This would be a permanent change and no more extra COVID IR spots from year to year.

Managers pay for draft picks they trade away

i.e Jason traded 2023 and 2024 firsts for Javonte Williams. Jason would have to pay for 23 and 24 buy in. This helps in the event that someone leaves the league and the new owner isn’t left with 0 draft picks.

Offseason trading window moves 2 weeks before drops are made

This offseason, we had to drop players to make our active roster reduce down to 24 players. Before dropping, this would give owners some time to make last minute trades if they are about to drop them.

New tanking measures

Current tanking measures:

1. 1st violation: 1st round pick forfeited

2. 2nd violation: two 1st round picks forfeited (futre picks may be taken as necessary)

3. 3rd violation: Suspension from league

Proposed tanking measures:

1. 1st violation: 2nd round pick forfeited

2. 2nd violation: 1st round picks forfeited (future picks may be taken as necessary)

3. 3rd violation: Suspension from league

What is “tanking”?

- Starting a player that is OUT, Suspended, IR, Inactive, or leaving a starting position empty

- Players listed as game time decision

o Defined game time decision: listed as questionable or probable at least 24 hours before kickoff

Draft order determined by max points for bottom 6 teams

Currently decided by W-L record, then max points.

This years draft order:

1. Ryan

2. Steven

3. Branden

4. Kevin

5. Jeff

6. Matt

What draft order would’ve been if max points was leading factor

1. Ryan

2. Branden

3. Steven

4. Matt

5. Jeff

6. Kevin
